There is no reliable post-1.0 community ranking yet. The safest current tier list is the official loot-tier placement: Mallet and Hockey Stick are Tier 1; Small Pipe, Large Pipe, and Baseball Bat are confirmed Tier 2 examples.
Official 1.0 tier placement
The official patch notes provide item tiers, not a developer ranking of “best” weapons. Tier placement primarily describes the item’s loot band and progression context; it does not prove that every Tier 2 weapon outperforms every Tier 1 weapon in every situation.

Why older rankings are stale
The available community tier lists and two-part video ranking were published before the Armageddon balance pass. The Baseball Bat received a large damage reduction, while Machete, Hatchet, Shovel, Small Pipe, and Mallet changed.
That makes an old S-to-F list useful as history, not a current recommendation. Repeating it after 1.0 would hide a known version conflict.
How to judge a melee weapon now
Compare current Quick, Strong, and Charged values, then account for reach, stamina use, attack timing, and the space available on the map. The last four factors need fresh gameplay testing; the collected official notes do not publish a complete comparative table.
Until a well-documented 1.0 ranking appears, use the official tiers as verified placement and treat performance rankings as provisional.
